The 2010 AmeriCorps grant recipients have been named and there are 329 lucky winners who all get a piece of the $234 million donation hoped to improve essential services across the country.

This free money is being awarded to applicants whose programs fall into one of the five funding categories outlined by the AmeriCorps program. These include: helping the poor, improving education, encouraging energy efficiency, strengthening access to healthcare and assisting veterans.

Not everyone, however, is receiving the same amount of money. Grants range from $800 awards for smaller missions and up to over 10 million for some of the larger ones. Money is being divided up by the federal Corporation for National and Community Service who decides exactly how the money should be distributed.

With these grants the government hopes to repair a number of flailing services here in the US, most important being literacy and overall education. As such, it should come as no big surprise that Teach for America is the overall big winner in these free money awards. This program is set to receive $11.4 million for 6,621 AmeriCorps members performing its services. Teach for America is a non-profit organization that works to get rid of education inequality across the country by placing recently graduated teachers to teach in low income areas. The money will help cover the cost of living for these teachers while they perform this vital public service.

Operation Welcome Home is another important program receiving almost $560,000 for their service. This program is run by the California Department of Veterans Affairs and employs 80 AmeriCorps members who help returning soldiers and military members in California transition back to civilian life.

Other big winners in the grant awards include: $400,000 for the Northern Mariana Islands; $650,000 to learn and Earn Alaska; $702,000 to the National AIDS Fund and $1,600,000 for Harlem Children's Zone Peacemaker Program; $1,096,000 for National Association of Service & Conservation Corps amongst so many others.

If you are interested in receiving free money from AmeriCorps now is the time to act. You can visit their website and find out exactly what you need to qualify. Regardless of how small your outfit is, there is money for you. These grant awards will continue to be available in abundance over the next few years as the government tries to get AmeriCorps services from a mere 80,000 members to 250,000 members by 2017. Don’t miss out on your opportunity.

If the whole grant application process is a bit too overwhelming for you, you can also choose to send away for a free grant application kit. This kit will tell you everything you need to know about applying for a grant, including a listing of all available grants, and a step by step guide through the application process. Apply today.

The week of March 14-20, dubbed “Sunshine Week,” requires that all government grant agencies make it clear to government grant applicants the processes and requirements that go into grant-making, at local, state and federal levels.

“As Sunshine Week begins, I want to applaud everyone who has worked to increase transparency in government and recommit my administration to be the most open and transparent ever, an effort that will strengthen our democracy and ensure the public’s trust in their government,” wrote President Obama this week.

The notion that the government should be completely transparent stems from President Obama’s idea that public engagement will enhance the government’s effectiveness and improve the quality of its decisions.

Recently instated in 2009, this new transparency will affect government grants by providing a database of past recipients; so that current applicants can 1) assess their likelihood of receiving government grants, and 2) let the public know where the government is spending their money.

You can visit www.recovery.gov and see clearly drawn out recipient reported data, detailing exactly the number of distributed awards, the amount of funding awarded, received funding and recipient reported jobs as up-to-date as Dec. 31, 2009.

For example, last year in New York State, the government awarded 3,060 grants, totaling roughly $10.21 billion dollars to be distributed over time. Of the $10 billion, between October and December, $1.77 of the grants were received. These government grants made it possible for a thus far 41, 767 jobs to be created. You can view details of the individual distributions on the website.
There are 5 steps to apply for government grants.
